Preparing for a Remodeling Project

One of the first things you need to do when preparing for remodeling is to set up your budget. Knowing beforehand what you can spend will help you stay within your limits and adjust the project accordingly.

Also, take the time to decide exactly what you want. Whether you are remodeling a kitchen, finishing a basement, or designing a bathroom, you need to think ahead, find pictures and colors you like, and organize your idea before calling in a contractor.

Next, you need to be realistic about the time it will take to complete your remodeling project. As a general rule, if there is something that can go wrong during your home renovation, it will. Therefore, as you set out your timeline, give yourself a little extra time to deal with the problems that are sure to arise during the project. When you set up your timeline, be sure to discuss with your contractors what will be done and when, so you know when workers will be in your home and what you can expect.

It would be a good idea to set aside a space for deliveries to be stored. As cabinets, hardware, sinks, flooring, etc. arrive at the house, having a designated area can make assembling and finding items so much simpler. A garage, large shed, or even a specific room in the house can be cleaned out and prepared specifically for this purpose.

You should also arrange for children and pets to be clear of the area while work is taking place. Set up play dates or daycare for the children or put the pets in animal boarding for the time needed.

Another consideration might be to lay down plastic in areas where people will be carrying tools and equipment in and out of the house. This will designate a specific traffic area and also protect your flooring.
